Language & Literature

The English Speaking Union (ESU), one of the oldest Commonwealth-affiliated organisations, and the  Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies are the two organisations working in the area of language and literature in the Commonwealth. The work of ESU extends beyond the Commonwealth.

An association of academics, practitioners and writers, ACLALS assists and promotes the study and research of Commonwealth literatures and languages.

Foundation: 1964

Accredited to the Commonwealth: 2005

Affiliated to the International Federation for Modern Languages and Literature (FILLM) and the Commonwealth Consortium for Education (CCfE).

Officers: Dr Michael A Bucknor (Department of Literatures in English, University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Kingston 7, Jamaica); Vice-Chairs: Professor Evelyn O’Callaghan (Barbados), Dr Patricia Saunders (Trinidad and Tobago/USA); Secretary/Treasurer: Tanya Shirley (Jamaica).

There are regional chairs for the different chapters of the association which are in Canada, the Caribbean, Europe, India, Malaysia, South Africa, South Pacific, Sri Lanka, East Africa and the USA. These branches hold an annual or a triennial conference in their regions, while ACLALS holds its major conference triennially. The next conference is scheduled to be held in St Lucia, in August 2013.

ESU promotes international understanding and human achievement through the widening use of the English language throughout the world. It has active groups in over 50 countries.
