Northern Cape

The Northern Cape is by far the largest province composing nearly a third of South Africa’s land area yet has by far the smallest population (about two percent of South Africa’s population). This is due to the landscape which is dominated by vast arid plains. Kimberley is the capital and is famous for its diamond mining past and as the historic hub of industrialisation in South Africa. The Province is divided into five district municipalities, namely the Namakwa District, the Pixley ka Seme District, the Siyanda District, the Frances Baard District, and the John Taolo Gaetsewe District, which can in turn be sub-divided into 27 local municipalities.
