Barclays Bank of Botswana


The story of Barclays Bank of Botswana began in 1950 when the first branch of Barclays Bank, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Barclays Plc., was opened in Lobatse.

During the past 63 years, the Bank has grown to be a leader in the financial services sector and is synonymous with the country’s development efforts with a presence in six areas where no other financial services provider operates in Botswana. The Bank has a network of 43 branches and 101 ATMs across the country.

In pursuit of its vision to make its customers’ lives easier, Barclays Bank of Botswana moves, lends, invests and safeguards its customers’ money through solid infrastructure with a staff complement of over 1,200 people.

The Bank’s product offering includes consumer and corporate banking, leveraging on access to the breadth of expertise across the Group. Through its subsidiary (ABSA Life), Barclays Bank of Botswana is able to offer embedded insurance products through its bancassurance proposition.

The Bank boasts a robust digital banking capability, with platforms such as Internet Banking, Mobile Banking, Tablet Banking and e-statements.

As a key partner in the country’s development, Barclays Bank of Botswana has a number of initiatives that support the Botswana Government’s development programmes. The Bank forms part of a syndicate that funded the expansion of Morupule Coal Mine in central Botswana. The project’s total loan was BWP 1.2 billion, with Barclays funding BWP 300 million.

Barclays has been recognised as the ‘Best Bank in Botswana’ four times by Emea Finance (2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012), twice by Euromoney (2009, 2011) and twice by The Banker (2010, 2012). The Bank was named Botswana’s most ‘Conscientious Corporate Bank of the Year’ for 2012, as well as being the country’s ‘Overall Best Bank of the Year 2012’ by InterContinental Finance.
