The publishing and printing industry of Antigua and Barbuda has had a long tradition and a strong focus on tourism: in 1992, the publishing house West Indies Publishing Ltd. was established specialising in magazines on sailing and tourist-related topics. The Antiguan remains a popular magazine which is deemed one of the country’s main tourist magazines. Another noteworthy publishing company established in 2006 is Regional Publications Ltd., which produces the bi-monthly business periodical Business Focus Antigua, the local Yellow Pages and the annual tourist magazine Paradise Antigua & Barbuda. Lightwave Publications Ltd. publishes the annual Antigua & Barbuda Marine Guide since 1994, targeted at Yacht owners on the islands. The Antigua Daily Observer remains the only daily published newspaper on the islands in 2012, with the Antigua Sun and CANA Caribbean News no longer in distribution. Various Caribbean educational publishers, including Macmillan Publishers Ltd. and Carlong Publishers Ltd., operate in Antigua and Barbuda.
There is little market for native language texts as the upper- and middle-classes shun the language, and there is little use for it in the educational system as all instruction is carried out in English. However, many locals speak Antiguan Creole, which became a respectable part of the Antiguan culture after the county’s independence, therefore the prospect of native language texts should not be ruled out. There are no international book fairs held in Antigua and Barbuda, however the country hosts an annual Antigua and Barbuda Literary Festival which has been running since 2006. Usually held in November each year, the three-day event celebrates the literary arts, with 100 authors taking part in the event.
The country ensures freedom of press rights for all printing. Every major publisher publishes from Antigua’s capital, St. John’s. Major new publications include the Antigua Sun, The Nation’s Voice, The Outlet and The Worker’s Voice, which are all published weekly. Macmillan Publishers Ltd. and Carlong Publishers Ltd. provide educational school and text books for the local population. West Indies Publishing Ltd. relies on England to publish a variety of publications, due to the vast size of the print run and the reliance on the country’s latest digital and printing technology.
