The construction industry contributes 7.5% to Australia’s GDP (2008). Civil engineering projects make up the bulk of all construction projects in terms of value across transport, utilities, recreation, mining and heavy industry sectors. There are over 16,000 engineering firms, employing over 124,000 people generating revenues of around AUS$18 billion, including exports.
The building industry has worldwide repute with construction companies of Australian origin operating in all markets, developed and developing. The country is well known in the architectural field where 7 out of the world’s top 60 architecture firms are from Australia. Almost 1 million people are employed by construction companies all over Australia (2009). Building and construction are regulated by the Australian Building and Construction Commissioner. The Australian government uses a National Code for regulating the affairs of public construction works. National Code projects must be partially funded by the government for the Code to apply. Privately funded construction projects with no federal funding do not need to follow this Code.
