Construction accounts for 8.2% of Bangladesh’s GDP (2008). It employs 2 million people, with a wide range of backgrounds and skill sets. The sector has been growing steadily since the 1990s. One of the major associations within the industry is the Bangladesh Association of Construction Industry (BACI), whose mission is to maintain the prestige of the construction and engineering industries, and encourage ongoing improvement. Designs and blueprints are generally based on the Code of Practice for the USA, UK, EU and Bangladesh. However, the degree to which the regulations of the Bangladesh National Building Code (BNBC) are implemented is questionable.
