Approximately half of the working population is employed in the agricultural, forestry and fisheries sectors which dominate the country; and 5% are employed in professional or technical related jobs (Labour Force Survey, 2005). Up to 95% of the population speak Bengali (also known as Bangla), whilst the remainder speak more localised dialects (2008). English is spoken mainly in urban areas. Foreign workers in Bangladesh require an employment visa, which is attained by providing a letter from an employer, a sanctioned letter from the relevant ministry, the Board of Investment or the Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority and a signed contract of employment.
