Bangladesh is a net importer of goods and services and faces a large trade deficit with India. Its net imports were 7% of GDP in 2007. The main imports – mainly from India and China – are machinery and equipment, chemicals, iron and steel, textiles, foodstuffs, petroleum products and cement. The USA is the largest export customer of Bangladesh and the main exports are garments, frozen fish and seafood, jute and jute goods, and leather. The average ad valorem tariff for imported goods is 14.8% (2008). The Board of Investment and the Export Promotion Bureau promote exports from the country.
