Find Oil and Gas expertise in Bangladesh

Bangladesh has small, proven oil reserves and little in the way of metallic mineral reserves; however, its potential for natural gas exploration is significant. It imports all of its petroleum and crude oil. The Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corporation (Petrobangla) is solely owned by the state and is the only company involved in the exploitation and marketing of oil. The country’s more substantial gas reserves have a greater diversity of corporate involvement, with Bangladesh Gas Fields and Sylhet Gas Field involved in production; Gas Transmission handling transmission; and Titas, Bakhrabad and Jalalabad Gas working on distribution. In 2010 the mineral industry produced mainly coal, granite, natural gas and petroleum.

The Ministry of Power, Energy and Extractives governs the extractive industry in Bangladesh.

The Speedy Supply of Power and Energy Bill 2010, which was in effect for two years, enabled the government to take quick and effective action to increase energy generation as well as improve the distribution, import, marketing, supply, transmission and transportation of mineral fuels. The bill also applied to initiatives for exploration in the energy sector and the extraction of mineral resources.

The government entity Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corporation (Petrobangla) is responsible for the exploration, production, transmission and distribution of natural gas in the country. Between 2009 and 2010, Petrobangla performed exploratory drillings and conducted seismic surveys in order to identify new gas fields and thereby add to the country’s gas reserves. Petrobangla was also in charge of the development of the country’s mineral deposits that had been determined to be economically feasible. The Geological Survey of Bangladesh handled exploration efforts for minerals.
