Standards and Regulation in Bangladesh

Bangladesh ranks number 107 of 183 countries in the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business Index (2010). It does however rank highly in terms of investor protection – number 20 out of 183 – sitting higher than its South Asian counterparts. These rankings measure the conduciveness of a regulatory regime in starting and operating a business. Key regulators in Bangladesh include the Bangladesh Bank, which regulates the financial system, the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission, and the Controller of Insurance. Bangladesh is a subscriber member of the International Organisation for Standards, while the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution is the country’s standards bureau.
