Construction contributes 3.6% to the total national GDP (2008). The public sector is a major driver of demand. The Ministry of Works is responsible for a significant proportion of this through its work on the construction of public works, bridge construction and maintenance, road construction and maintenance, and rural water supply infrastructure. The Ministry of Housing & Urban Development focuses on housing development, town planning and urban renewal. Most of this work is done through bidding by local and international private contractors and engineers. The Association of Professional Architects of Belize (APAB) and the Association of Professional Engineers of Belize (APEB) are the relevant professional organisations.
