The largest companies in Belize are primarily in the sectors of financial services, energy, water and telecommunications. The most prominent examples include BCB Holdings (which owns the largest bank, Belize Bank), Mollejon Power, G.A. Roe and Sons Ltd (owner of RF&G Insurance) and Belize Telemedia. Since 2009 the government has been involved in a protracted political and legal battle to control particular telecoms and utility companies. It took over a 94% stake in Belize Telemedia from private hands in 2009 with the backing of legislation but successive court rulings have made its ownership uncertain. There is a significant presence of offshore firms. Belizean offshore companies are exempt from income tax, from taxes on all dividends, from taxes on all interests, rent, royalties, compensations and other amounts, on capital gains on shares, debt obligations or other securities. The country has no stock exchange.
