The Ministry of Education and Youth Belize is responsible for ensuring that all Belizeans are given an opportunity to acquire the knowledge, skills and professional attitudes required for their independent development, and for the benefit of the nation. It works in collaboration with all education-related stakeholders. This organisation is sub-divided into a variety of departments such as Teacher Education & Development Services, which includes the Board of Teachers; Employment Training and Education Services, which administers the curriculum; and exterior services such as the National Library Service and the Policy and Planning Information Analysis Service.
Public spending on education was 6.1% of GDP in 2009.
The government aims to reform secondary education: to put an affordable high school within reach of all Belizean children; increase enrolment rates; and lower dropout rates, leading to a reduction in crime and poverty.
