Standards and Regulation in Brunei Darussalam

Brunei Darussalam ranks 112 out of 183 countries in the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business Index (2011). It ranks fairly averagely for a south-east Asian country, with Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia all ranking above it but Indonesia and Laos ranking below it. The principal economic regulators in Brunei are the Ministry of Finance, which is the main banking regulator; with other financial regulators including the Brunei Currency Board and the Financial Institution Division. Brunei is a correspondent member of the International Organisation for Standardisation; this means that the country does not yet have a fully-developed national standards activity — though it does have the Construction Planning and Research Unit, which fulfils some of these functions.
