The Ministry of Education Brunei Darussalam is the government ministry responsible for implementing a national education system that prioritises the use of the Malay Language as the official national language, and the use of the Malay and English languages as the media of instruction. The various departments within the Ministry’s remit are focused on either core or higher education. Core departments include the Department of Schools, the Department of Examination, the Private Institutions Section and the Special Education Unit. Higher departments include the Scholarship Section and the Department of Human resource Development.
Public spending on education was 2.0% of GDP in 2010.
The Brunei Vision 2035 embodies the goal of a well-educated, highly skilled society with a world-class education system that promotes lifelong learning. Towards this end, the Ministry of Education has adopted three major themes in its five-year strategic plan 2012–17: quality education; teaching and learning excellence; and professional, accountable and efficient organisation. As well as substantial investment in public education, the plan acknowledges the contribution of the private sector in growing the education system in the country. There are already 115 private schools, covering all age levels.
