Brunei has friendly international relationships with countries all around the world, though the emphasis of its bilateral and multilateral relationship is very much within the context of South-East Asia. It is a member of ASEAN of which it is a very active member. A notable bilateral relationship is that of Brunei and Indonesia — for they share a common faith, Islam; promote cultural exchange; and encourage respective educational visits. Emphasis has been put on encouraging closer ties with the two nations’ young populations, through the shared participation of sports competitions; and in promoting regional stability. In the context of the ASEAN, Brunei works to promote the regional economy and to aid the ASEAN work as a trade bloc.
