Trade unions in Cameroon play a key role in influencing commercial practices, and assisting the work force of the nation. The National Union of Cameroon Workers or UNTC historically associated with the Cameroon’s People Democratic Movement was the sole trade union in Cameroon until 1995. In this year the Union of Free Trade Unions was also formed. The trade unions of the country operate under the Federation of Trade Unions of Cameroon; the apex body under which individual trade unions collaborate to foster unity and reach unified goals. The Constitution and the Labour Code recognise workers’ right to strike, but only after mandatory arbitration has taken place.
