Research Institutes in Canada
Research in a wide range of fields is undertaken at higher education institutions and research institutes in Canada. The National Research Council (NRC) is the Government of Canada’s premier organisation for research and development. It has 20 institutes and national programs focusing on life sciences, physical sciences, engineering, technology and industry support, and corporate management. Canada also has many non-governmental research institutes which benefit from public grants, including those from the NRC, and private grants. Examples of research institutes include the Fraser Institute and the Canadian Research Institute for Social Policy (University of New Brunswick), which focus on public and educational policy in the social policy sector; the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) which focuses on the sciences, with research on nanotechnology, genetic networks and quantum materials amongst their programmes; and FPInnovations which focuses on forestry research.
