Canada’s international relations are conducted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the country’s foreign policy is expected to reflect Canadian values on an international stage. Canada takes a strong stance in supporting human rights, therefore backing motions such as the UN’s Universal Periodic Review. The country also follows a nuclear non-proliferation policy as part of a wider aim to eliminate weapons of mass destruction.
Canada’s broader foreign-policy aims include its assertion of sovereignty in the Arctic, cooperation on security in the Americas, a contribution to global governance and international security, and the reinforcement of its relationship with the United States.
Canada enjoys mostly cordial bilateral relations with several other nations and these are maintained through Canadian embassies in a large number of countries.
