Cyprus is a net importer of goods and services with net imports accounting for 11% of GDP (2008). As a member of the European Union, Cyprus adheres to the Common Customs Tariff and other EU regulations with regards to imports and exports. The average ad valorem tariff for imports into the EU is 5.6%.The country’s main export commodities are citrus, potatoes, pharmaceuticals, cement and clothing. Imported commodities include transport equipment, consumer goods, petroleum and lubricants, machinery and intermediate goods. The trade service, part of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, is the government body promoting the export of Cypriot goods and services.
