The Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development has responsibility for primary and secondary education and provides support for tertiary education. The Ministry is also responsible for establishing policies, standards and for supervising early childhood education. Prominent related agencies include the Curriculum Unit, which is in charge of maintaining a curriculum framework, providing teaching materials and examinations; and the National Documentation Centre Database and the National Library Services, which service the country’s libraries and archiving needs.
Public spending on education was 4.1% of GDP in 2008.
Free textbooks are provided for all primary school pupils and for secondary students in years 1 to 3. The Education Trust Fund gives support to poor students, specifically secondary school and tertiary level students, who cannot afford tuition.
