The head of state is the non-executive president who is appointed by parliament after nomination by the prime minister, in consultation with the leader of the opposition, and serves for a maximum of two five-year terms. A person is able to be put forward for nomination if they are of forty years or upwards, and have been resident in Dominica for five years immediately preceding his nomination. Whenever the office of president is vacant or the term of office of the president is due to expire within not more than ninety days, the prime minister shall consult with the leader of the opposition as to their joint nomination of a suitable candidate for election as president.
