Prime Minister

The Prime Minister of Fiji is the head of government and a minister in his or her own right. The prime minister is thus responsible for strategic matters such as defence, natural resources and finance. Other powers of the prime minister include the right to name ministers to sit in the Senate and to select high-ranking jurists, such as the Chief Justice.

According to the constitution of 1998, the president selects the prime minister from the House of Representatives. This selection is based on who commands the confidence of parliament, which is usually the leader of the majority party in parliament. The current prime minister, however, was self-appointed and is not recognised by the Commonwealth.
