The insurance business in Guyana is relatively small and accounts for approximately six per cent of total financial sector assets (2007). There are over 10 insurance companies and approximately six insurance brokers registered to offer both general and life insurance services in the country. All insurance companies operating in the country must be registered with the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance—established under the 1998 Insurance Act— which is the public body responsible for the supervision and regulation of insurance and pension activities in Guyana.
