Mining is an important part of Guyana’s economy, with the country being one of the world’s largest bauxite producers. The mining sector contributes approximately 10 per cent of the country’s GDP and accounts for over 40% of exports (2005). Among Guyana’s other mineral resources are gold, diamond, alumina and uranium. In 2005, Guyana produced nearly 1.6 million metric tons of bauxite, 262,528 ounces of gold and 356,950 metric carats of diamonds. There are a range of mineral exploration and mining companies operating in Guyana and large international firms such as RUSAL and BHP Billiton have a presence. The Guyana Geology and Mines Commission is the government entity with the responsibility of the regulation of the mining industry under the 1989 Mining Act.
Quarrying in Guyana extracts mainly construction materials for both the local and international markets. Crushed stone for road building materials is one of the most prominent materials quarried, as well as stone for sea and river defence.
The industry’s production took a sharp downturn in the 2010s due to issues with equipment and other logistical problems with production companies. In 2010, Guyana produced more than 500,000 tons of stone, and demand has grown exponentially since. Other materials extracted include sand and clay. The government has had to import materials for several major projects.
