There are nine years of compulsory education starting at age six. Some 69% of pupils complete primary school (2006). The school year starts in April.

There are numerous independent or private schools throughout India. The Right to Education Act, passed in 2009, mandates that private schools set aside 25% of admissions for low-income, underprivileged and disabled students. It should be noted that it has generated some controversy. One of the most prestigious is the Woodstock School, which attracts students from all around the world, giving the school a cosmopolitan quality. This is reflected in their primary desire “to mould students into global citizens”. Another notable example is the Shri Ram School in New Delhi, which boasts a progressive, secular, child centred, co-educational envrionment committed to providing quality education for all their students.
