Research Institutes in India
India has a wide range of higher education institutions, and has more recently developed various specialised research institutes. These focus on a wide range of subjects, from the social sciences, to agriculture and biotechnology – offering a huge scope for research. Notable research institutes include the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), which is the top body for managing research in areas such as horticulture, fisheries and animal sciences. It possesses approximately 97 ICAR institutes and 47 agricultural universities (2011), making it one of the largest national agricultural systems in the world. Another key example is The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), which is one of the oldest medical research bodies in the world. It focuses on a wide range of medical topics, including environmental health, the management of communicable diseases, mental health research, and studies on diseases such as diabetes amongst other things.
