Sagicor Life and Guardian are the most dominant players in Jamaica’s insurance field accounting for significant levels of asset concentration (50%-75%) with respect to the entire life and general insurance sectors (2010). Products on offer across the industry include, among many others, life insurance, health insurance, motor insurance and property insurance. In the last IMF Financial System Stability Assessment (2006) report, Jamaica’s insurance sector was found to be stable and profitable. However, the sector remains to an extent vulnerable to interest rate risk and natural disasters, with particular respect to general insurance. The sector is regulated by the Financial Services Commission.
