Find Construction and Engineering expertise in Kiribati

Construction in Kiribati contributes less than 5% to total national GDP (2008). In this light, there are only a few local companies undertaking small projects in Kiribati; with larger-scale projects usually contracted to overseas companies. The government is involved in most schemes, with some projects gaining loans from the Asian Development Bank and the World Bank — as demonstrated in the government’s scheme to replace the nation’s road infrastructure. The tropical climate, alongside the saline atmosphere, makes the maintenance of buildings expensive. Therefore traditional housing, rather than modern construction, is often preferred since this can be repaired easily and cheaply. All construction plans and proposals have to go through the Ministry of Public Works and Utilities for approval.
