Research Institutes in Kiribati

The number of research institutes within Kiribati is naturally limited by the country’s geographical location and its limited size. They are either linked with native campus of the University of the South Pacific, or are national agencies of the government. Examples include the Kiribati Met Office, which monitors weather patterns on behalf of the government, with key functions also observing sea levels and the availability of water supplies. The UPS links up with regional research bodies such as the Institute of Pacific Studies, which helps to foster a regional intellectual discourse. A minority of independent examples exist such as the Centre of Excellence for Atoll Agriculture Research and Development, which aims to establish a knowledge base on Atoll Agriculture with the participation of the farmers themselves; improve management for Atoll Agriculture.
