Agriculture, forestry and fisheries contribute 31% of GDP (2007). Forested area accounts for 36% of Malawi’s total land area (2005), but shrank by 0.8% p.a. during 1990-2005. There are 69 forest reserves, mostly created in mountains and escarpments for watershed protection. Commercial timber production is relatively small-scale. More than 90% of the population use wood fuel for energy. The Department of Forestry runs the National Forestry Programme, which aims to increase sustainable timber production.
