Malawi is a net importer of goods and services. Net imports accounted for 24% of GDP in 2005. The average ad valorem tariff for imported goods is 14% (2006). The main exports are tobacco (53% of export value), tea, sugar, cotton, coffee, rubber, macadamia nuts, soya, rice, spices, textiles, clothing, footwear, wood products, gemstones and, from 2009/10, uranium. Malawi’s main imports are food, petroleum products, building materials, fertilisers and transport equipment. The Malawi Export Promotion Council supports the development of the export business.
