Construction contributes 2.6% to Malaysia’s GDP (2008). This contribution is small relative to other countries; but Malaysia also exports its contracting services to other countries throughout Asia and the Middle East. The sector is well-established, employing about 800,000 people. The Construction Industry Development Board and the Building Industry President Council are the key sector bodies. In recent years the civil engineering sector registered growth due to greater activity in the oil and gas sector, the implementation of some projects of the Ninth Malaysian Plan (9MP) and “growth corridors” development. The Malaysian Society for Engineering and Technology is one of the main engineering institutes in the country.
