There are 11 years of compulsory education starting at age five. Primary school comprises six years and secondary seven. The numerous church schools are subsidised by the government. The school year starts in September.

A combination of state, private and religious institutions provides for an extensive education system, catering to students at all levels. Church schools are subsidised by government and their tuition is free.

Parents in Malta have the option of sending their children to one of the many private or church schools that exist in the country. Church schools are semi-independent as they also receive some funding from the state. Private schools such as Verdala International School and St. Edward’s College offer international qualifications, notably the International Baccalaureate and IGCSEs.
