Mauritius is a net importer of goods and services at 4% of GDP (2005). The average ad valorem tariff for imported goods is 3.5% (2007). Mauritius is a member of the COMESA Free Trade Area (FTA) and resultantly 0% customs duty on eligible goods originating in the country is required in the free trade area. Primary import commodities are farm produce and foodstuffs, oil, consumer goods and chemical products, with France, India, China, South Africa, Bahrain and Japan being the country’s main import partners. Mauritius’s exports include textiles, sugar and fish, and its main export partners are the United Kingdom, France, the United States, Madagascar and Italy.
