Mauritius is generally considered to be a country that safeguards freedom of expression and of the press. The country has approximately 34 weeklies, eight dailies, four television operators and four radio operators (2008). L’Express, Le Mauricien and Le Matinal are the major dailies published in French, while News on Sunday and Mauritius Times are the weekly English-language newspapers. The Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) is the state-run network that operates three channels and a service for Rodrigues island. There are also dailies in Hindi, Urdu and Chinese, reflective of the country’s cultural diversity. MBC stations include Radio Maurice 1 and 2, Kool FM, Taal FM and One World FM. The other popular stations are Top FM, Radio One and Radio Plus. Mauritius College of the Air (MCA) generally broadcasts more English-language programmes.
