Regional & Local Government

Mozambique is divided into ten provinces with the capital city being Maputo. Each province is headed by a provincial governor, who is appointed by the president and indirectly elected by local assemblies. The provinces are: Maputo, Gaza, Inhambane, Sofala, Manica, Zambezia, Tete, Nampula, Cabo Delgado and Niassa. Each province is subdivided into districts and further divided into administrative posts, localities and settlements, as set out by Mozambique’s constitution. Urban zones are classified either as cities or as towns.
