Surveys of telecoms in Nauru show there are 186 main telephone lines per 1000 people (2009) but only 600 internet users among the entire population of around 10,000 people (2011).  State-owned RONTEL or the government of Nauru have been the traditional suppliers of main telephone lines in the country. Cenpacnet Inc. which has been operating since 2000 is Nauru’s only internet provider; it is jointly owned and operated by the RONTEL and the Ministry for Nauru Phosphate Royalties Trust. Cenpacnet also operates the .nr domain name and maintains a webmail server.  Mobile phone coverage in Nauru began in 2009 with a partnership between Digicel, a large regional mobile phone network provider, and the government of Nauru. There are satellite internet connections at various institutions such as the Australian High Commission and the Nauru campus of the University of South Pacific (USP). The Ministry of Telecommunications is responsible for monitoring and regulating the telecoms industry in Nauru.
