Regional & Local Government

Nauru has no capital city but most government offices are located in Yaren. Nauru has no system of local government; previous systems such as the Nauru Local Government Council and the Nauru Island Council were dissolved in 1999 and all local power was transferred to the national government. However the country does have 14 centrally administered districts divided into eight political constituencies with two members of Parliament coming from each constituency of Aiwo, Anabar, Anetan, Boe, Buada, Meneng and Yaren, and four members coming from the Ubenide constituency. There is no official party-system in Nauru, most members of Parliament run as independents, however there are occasional loose alliances.
