Advertising, marketing and PR are developing industries in Papua New Guinea. Traditionally the activity in this area has been mainly centred on the large tourism industry. The Papua New Guinea Tourist Board being the largest marketing company promoting the country to tourists internationally.
The Pacific Islands Trade and Invest (PT&I) organisation promotes the trade interests of Papua New Guinea along with other Pacific islands. PT&I’s main focus in Papua New Guinea is the marketing and exportation of cocoa, spices and essential oils. Other marketing companies in the country include the PNG Agency Marketing Services based in Gerehu.
Few advertising and marketing companies are listed indicating that the work tends to be done in-house. Likewise, PR professionals often work in-house.
Printed press remains the most popular place for companies to advertise products and services in the Papua New Guinea and all but one of the major newspapers have an online presence. These both offer companies and private individuals to advertise but in only a few of the country’s many languages and dialects.
In terms of broadcast media advertising and marketing, radio is more widespread than television and the myriad of different languages spoken in the country makes it difficult for companies to advertise countrywide with the same broadcaster.
Social media uptake is low in 2012, only 2.24% of the population is one Facebook although this figure rose steadily throughout the second half of that year. As a result social media advertising, marketing and PR is not yet a distinct or developed industry.
