There are eleven years of school education starting at age seven, comprising six years of primary, and five of secondary, with cycles of three and two years. The school year starts in January.
The International Education Agency of Papua New Guinea is responsible for about 20 private schools that operate all around Papua New Guinea. In terms of student numbers, the schools vary in size from as small as 20 students with one teacher (Kamarau International School) to 800 with 50 teachers (Port Moresby International School). They all follow the International Education Agency’s core academic curriculum, which includes subjects such as English, mathematics, society and the environment, science, technology, and physical education. Port Moresby International School offers the popular International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE).
