There is ample opportunity for development in Rwanda’s insurance sector. The sector is largely limited to property and casualty. Only about four established companies that offer insurance services are in operation, the more established ones being SONARWA, SORAS and COGEAR. Insurance penetration is fairly low, with assets in the sector accounting for only 1.7% of GDP (2005). The regulatory body for the sector, namely the National Insurance Commission (CNA), focuses on the continual development of a regulatory and supervisory framework, as well as on the training of experienced professionals to ensure growth stimulation.
