President

The President of the Republic of Rwanda is the head of state. The first democratically elected president took office in 2003. The president is the guardian of the constitution and is tasked with guaranteeing national unity and continuity of the state, the independence and territorial integrity of the country, and with respecting international treaties and agreements. The president is elected for a term of seven years, renewable only once.
