Tourism in Rwanda

Rwanda is popularly referred to as ‘the land of a thousand hills’, and is most well known as the home of the mountain gorilla in the Virunga Mountains, a volcanic range that offers high altitude forests with diverse ecosystems. The beautiful Lake Kivu has clusters of islands and beautiful beaches. Rwanda is home to vast national parks, including the Akagera National Park, which offers great lakes and marshlands where hippopotami, crocodiles and a multitude of bird species can be found; and the Nyungwe Forest National Park, on the south-western border, which provides hiking trails that take visitors past 13 species of primates, hundreds of species of birds, 100 different orchids, giant ferns, exotic butterflies, twisting vines and enormous trees. Mountain biking and fishing are also popular tourist activities in these parks.
