There is no mining industry and no multinational mining corporations with a presence in Saint Lucia.
Quarrying plays only a minor role in Saint Lucia’s economy, and does not contribute a great deal to GDP. Quarrying is centered around gravel pits, sand pits and pumice quarries, which are used to supply the construction sector. Cement is exported. Illegal sand mining on beaches has posed problems, with detrimental effects on biodiversity for eco-sensitive beaches such as Grand Anse.
There are no multinational quarrying corporations with a presence in Saint Lucia. Prominent companies at a national level include C. O. Williams Construction Saint Lucia Ltd.
According to the Saint Lucia Government Statistics Department, just 121 people were employed in quarrying in 2010.
Quarrying permits can be obtained from the Physical Planning Section of the Development Control Authority.
Beaches in Saint Lucia are protected under the Beach Protection Act, the Physical Planning and Development Act and the Fisheries Act. Illegal sand mining is punishable by fines and offenders can have equipment confiscated.
