Find Water and Sanitation expertise in Samoa
Water resource management in Samoa is split between the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries and Meteorology, which deals with watershed management and hydrology, and the Health Department, which monitors water quality standards. Samoa Water Authority is the national service provider of water while the Electric Power Corporation is the biggest water user for hydro-electricity generation. Samoa has access to an acceptable level of surface and ground water. Around 90–95% of the people have access to piped water, 65% of which is supplied by surface water and 35% by borehole and rainwater. Surface water availability is highly affected by the yearly rainfall, the land use practices and user demand. Approximately 96% of the population use an improved drinking water source and 98% have adequate sanitation facilities (2010).
