Agriculture, forestry and fisheries contribute 51% of Sierra Leone’s GDP (2008). Forests cover almost 40% of the total land area (2005). The forests of Sierra Leone consist primarily of evergreen and semi-deciduous plant types that cover the lowland areas. Sierra Leone has in the region of 50 forest reserves and conservation areas, of which about 11 are protected. The Conservation Society of Sierra Leone (CSSL) holds the responsibility of promoting conservation and managing the natural resources of Sierra Leone through enabling sustainable development by collaborating with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security to meet this purpose.
