Civil rights and religious freedoms are respected and a critical press is able to operate in Sierra Leone. The constitution of the country upholds all fundamental media rights. The main newspapers are Awoko, The Democrat, the Standard Times, the Independent Observer and the Concord Times. The UN Mission in Sierra Leone (Unamsil) operates several radio services that broadcast news of UN activities and human rights information, as well as music. Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service (SLBS) provides limited coverage, while ABC TV is the major private network. SLBS is also the national broadcaster of radio services, with private stations including Kiss FM, Radio Democracy, SKYY FM and Capital Radio.
FM transmits BBC World Service and Radio France Internationale is available on air in Freetown. The Sierra Leone International Media Organization (Slimo) is a regional non-governmental, non-profit network of industry professionals that focus on creating a bridge between international media activities and Sierra Leone’s media development.
