Construction contributes to approximately 0.7% of the Solomon Islands GDP (2008). However, there was a near 40% increase in construction permits in the same year, driven primarily buy the emergence of new constructions around the capital, Honiara. Commercial bank loans to the construction sector were valued at around $128 million in 2010, up 18% on the previous year. The Solomon Islands is a corresponding member of the Commonwealth Engineering Council, an organisation that promotes co-operation between engineers and engineering institutions throughout the Commonwealth.
