The Solomon Islands has an adult literacy rate of over 76% (2006). All education in the country is in English and professional and managerial Solomon Islanders speak it fluently.  Foreign workers must acquire a permit to work in the country and must also be approved by the Commissioner of Labour. Approval is based on qualifications and availability of work. The Solomon Islands College of Higher Education provides some courses aimed at improving the lower and middle human resource requirements of the country. Some other organisations offer training for various employment including opportunities in car maintenance, sheet metal working and carpentry.
